Why was there not an extra regular season game in 2005 when the Red Sox and Yankess finished tied?
Last night the Padres and Rockies played an extra game to see which team would be the National League Wild Card. But, in '05 the Yankees were simply declared the Division Champs even though they had an identical record to the Red Sox and their streak of consecutive division titles continued. At the time I thought it was unfair to not give the Red Sox at least a chance to win with the extra game. Was there a different rule in that year that has since changed? What's the deal?
There is a big difference between Division winner and Wild Card, vs Wild Card and out of the playoffs.
If both teams are going in, they will go with best record.
In the case you are citing, I doubt if either team would have wanted to play an extra game just to win a division title.
