In what ways is the CCD in an ordinary good digital camera different from that on a professional telescope?
Ordinary consumer CCD cameras are less efficient, less sensitive, more noisy and automatically record in color, which lowers the overall resolution of the CCD chip by about 1/3rd. Images recorded on a consumer level camera are also compressed, which adds noise and introduces distortions into the image data.
Professional CCD's are electronically chilled, not compressed and are monochrome (generally). While consumer level cameras can be used for astrophotography, the results are generally poorer than with professional level cameras and related software.
