What are all the accessories needed to own a rat?
I'm thinking of getting a pair. Also, how much care do they need? I'm use to owning snakes-- they eat once a week, poop once a week and only need their water changed every once and awhile.
As with any pet the initial start up costs and gathering of items needed can be overwhelming and a lot.
You will need a good cage, which will be the bulk of your costs. I only recommend three cages that are appropriate for rats. Martin's cages for rats (R-680 and above), Midwest Critter Nation and the Rat Manor Habitat (maximum of two rats). Most bar spacing on cages are to large for rats who can easily slip out of 1 inch spacing – adequate size, durability and quality is also an issue to most.
You will need to find a good sable food to feed. You can choose a quality lab block or you can create your own mix. I personally do not recommend anything from the pet stores especially seed mixes. Some stores do sell oxbow and even though the ingredients list is appropriate I’ve heard a lot of rats do not like the teste of their blocks. I recommend Harlan Teklad or create your own homemade mix such as Suebee or Debbie Ducommun’s Diet. Daily servings of fruits and vegetables should be given along with any diet you choose.
A good bedding for their cage is a must. Yesterday’s news is a great choice as well as other recycled paper type litters. Aspen is safe but pine and cedar are poisonous. You can also use fabrics such as fleece or flannel to line the cage levels with. Whichever litter you decide on make sure there is very minimal dust and no perfumes and dyes as this is very irritating to rats’ respiratory systems.
A good water bottle and a bowl is a must. A good heavy crock is great as rats tend to like to balance themselves on the edge of their bowls while they eat and you do not want them tipped over. You can choose to supply water in a bowl as well but this will need changed more often as you will find your rats will bath themselves in it. A water bottle is recommended. There are pros and cons of them all so you will find yourself experimenting with several brands until you find the one you prefer.
Toys! Rats love to play. You can make your own or buy toys. Mine personally LOVE the plastic cat balls with bells inside. Hanging wood bird toys tend to be a favorite as well. Igloos are great but you can make your own out of an unwanted cardboard box. You can also make your own toys such as stuffing a toilet paper roll with yummy foods, fold the ends up and hang from the top of their cage. Hammocks can easily be made out of old clothing such as a cut off jean pants leg makes a great double decker hammock. Use your imagination when it comes to toys and hides and other accessories inside the cage.
A Veterinarian is very important to have with any pet. In case of rats there are few vets that are knowledgeable about them. Call around and research before you get your rats.
